KEY TO THE CODES AT END OF THE PLANT DESCRIPTIONS:

H* - attracts Hummingbirds
B* - attracts Butterflies or feeds butterfly larvae
W* - Water efficient/drought tolerant plants
C* - California native plant or derivative
F* - especially good cut Flower or cut Foliage
S* - fragrant flowers ("S" for Scented)

Abutilon 'Dwarf Red', "FLOWERING MAPLE" - Dwarf form of this fast-growing, evergreen, spreading shrub w/ maple-like leaves & nodding, red, bowl-shaped flowers over long season; hummingbird favorite. [25] (H*)

Adiantum capillus-veneris, "SOUTHERN MAIDENHAIR" - Easiest of maidenhair ferns; jet-black, wiry stems & bright green, fan-shaped leaflets; dainty look belies tough constitution of established plants; spreads by rhizomes. [17] (C*)

Asarum caudatum, "WILD GINGER" - Choice, Calif. native, creeping perennial w/ large, shiny, heart-shaped leaves & curious, maroon red flowers w/ long tails hidden under foliage; crushed leaves pleasantly aromatic. [10] (C*)

Asparagus retrofractus, "MING ASPARAGUS" - Choice type of asparagus fern w/ long, arching, silvery gray stems & dark green, thread-like foliage in fluffy clusters; tiny white flowers are inconspicuous; excellent in flower arrangements. [20] (F*)

Aspidistra elatior, "CAST-IRON PLANT" - Victorian favorite - tough plant indoors or outdoors, w/ bold, deep green, long-stalked leaves; can take even deep shade & some drought. [27/18]

Aspidistra elatior 'Dwarf Milky Way', "CAST-IRON PLANT" - Rare form of this Victorian favorite - tough, slow-growing plant indoors or outdoors, w/ bold, deep green leaves flecked yellow; can take even deep shade (='Ginga Minor'). [17]

Aspidistra elatior 'Variegata', "CAST-IRON PLANT" - Victorian favorite - tough plant indoors or outdoors, w/ bold, deep green, long-stalked leaves striped creamy white; can take even deep shade & some drought. [17+7]

Aucuba japonica 'Variegata', "GOLD DUST PLANT" - Sturdy shrub for shade densly clothed in shiny, dark green, coarsely toothed leaves that are handsomely spotted glowing yellow; dark maroon flowers inconspicuous. [25]
